Technological change and domestic outsourcing

Domestic outsourcing has grown substantially in developed countries over the past two decades. This paper addresses question of technological drivers this phenomenon by studying impact staggered diffusion broadband internet France during 2000s. Our results confirm that technology increases firm productivity and relative demand for high-skill workers. Further, we show led firms to outsource some non-core occupations service contractors, both low segments. In cases, find employment related these became increasingly concentrated specializing activities, was less likely be performed in-house within specialized other activities. As a result, after arrival internet, establishments become homogeneous their occupational composition. Finally, provide suggestive evidence workers experience salary gains from being outsourced, while low-skill lose out.
